Keeping the Fire Burning: The Story of the 6th Annual Grill Masters

Every community has traditions.

Some begin with a simple idea. Others grow into annual gatherings that people look forward to because they offer an opportunity to reconnect, share stories, enjoy good food, and create new memories.

Grill Masters has become one of those traditions.

Now entering its sixth year, what began as a friendly barbecue competition has grown into much more than a cook-off. It has become a celebration of brotherhood, fellowship, community engagement, and friendly competition centered around something everyone can appreciate: good food and even better company.

As the event continues to evolve, new leadership has embraced the responsibility of preserving what made Grill Masters special while preparing it for its next chapter.

One of those leaders is Hugh James.

Carrying the Torch

When asked what attracted him to continuing Grill Masters, Hugh’s answer was simple.

"I liked the concept and everyone had a great time."

Sometimes that is exactly how lasting traditions take root.

Not because they are flashy. Not because they are profitable. But because they bring people together.

That belief has helped carry Grill Masters into its sixth year while preserving the fellowship and friendly competition that made the event meaningful from the beginning.

Growing the Tradition

Every successful event eventually reaches a point where growth requires reflection, adjustment, and new ideas.

For Grill Masters, Hugh believes the biggest challenge is not enthusiasm. It is attracting more competitors.

"The only real challenge is getting competitors."

Rather than viewing that as a setback, he sees it as an opportunity to continue improving the experience.

"Which may require us to pivot in the future if we continue."

That perspective reflects something many long-standing community events eventually discover: honoring tradition does not mean resisting change. It means finding new ways to engage people while preserving the spirit that made the event special.

Building Something Bigger

Hugh’s vision extends beyond hosting another successful barbecue competition.

His long-term goal is to help Grill Masters grow into a signature fundraiser capable of supporting meaningful initiatives throughout the year.

"To scale to the point where it is the only fundraiser we need to do for the year and it funds everything and more that we choose to do."

It is an ambitious vision, but one rooted in sustainability.

The goal is not simply to award trophies or earn bragging rights. It is to create an event that generates resources, strengthens relationships, supports community-focused work, and continues serving others for years to come.

Making Participation Easier

As organizers consider the future of Grill Masters, one priority continues to stand out: making it easier for more members to participate.

“Trying to make it easier for Bruhs to participate.”

For this year’s competition, grilling participation is limited to members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., reflecting the event’s current tradition and the custom competition aprons created for participants.

Organizers are also exploring ways to expand participation in future years while preserving the identity and legacy that have shaped Grill Masters.

This Year's Competition

Competitors will put their grilling skills to the test in two featured categories:

Best Chicken

Best Ribs

One participant will also earn the event’s highest recognition as the Overall Grill Masters Champion.

The competition will bring together grillers, supporters, families, and community members for an afternoon of food, fellowship, and friendly rivalry.

Honoring the Past While Building the Future

"Where It All Began"

Every successful tradition exists because someone was willing to start it.

Just as importantly, it continues because someone is willing to carry it forward.

As Grill Masters celebrates its sixth year, Founders Legacy Foundation is proud to partner in supporting the continued growth of an event that represents fellowship, service, community, and legacy.

Through this partnership, the Foundation hopes to help strengthen the event’s organization, expand its visibility, attract community support, and contribute to its long-term sustainability.

In the coming weeks, Founders Legacy Foundation will also share the story of the original founders whose vision sparked Grill Masters and laid the foundation for everything it has become today.

Because preserving a legacy means honoring both those who started the fire and those committed to keeping it burning.
