A conversation with the founders whose vision sparked what is now entering its sixth year.
When we recently shared the story of Brother Hugh James and his commitment to carrying Grill Masters into its next chapter, many people saw what the event has become today.
But every tradition has an origin.
Long before the trophies, custom aprons, annual bragging rights, and community fellowship, Grill Masters began with a simple conversation between brothers.
What started as a friendly debate has grown into one of the chapter's signature annual traditions—a celebration of fellowship, competition, and the belief that great ideas can become lasting legacies.
To better understand where it all began, Founders Legacy Foundation sat down with the founders to reflect on the journey that started it all.
It Started With Bragging Rights
Like many great ideas, Grill Masters wasn't created inside a boardroom.
It started with conversation.
More specifically...
It started with brothers insisting they made the best barbecue.
Rather than letting the debate continue, the founders decided to settle it in the most Omega way possible.
Fire up the grills.
Invite the brothers.
Let the food decide.
When asked why they created Grill Masters, they laughed before answering.
"There were brothers who were bragging about having the best BBQ, and we thought it was a great opportunity to host a competition that involved the brothers."
What began as friendly competition quickly revealed something much bigger.
"We also saw it as an opportunity to create an annual event that could grow into something massive—a major fundraiser and a staple event."
Even before the first grill was lit, the founders believed they weren't simply organizing another cookout.
They were creating an experience.
More Than Just a Cookout
Many successful events are created to solve a problem.
Grill Masters wasn't.
It was created to bring people together.
When asked what problem they were trying to solve, the founders offered an answer that perfectly captures the spirit of the event.
"There was no problem to solve. We merely wanted to settle bragging rights."
Then something unexpected happened.
As planning continued and the first competition came to life, they realized they had created something much larger than either of them anticipated.
"As we started to develop it, we didn't realize what we had created."
What they saw wasn't simply another chapter event.
It was the beginning of a tradition.
One capable of becoming the chapter's version of a signature annual celebration—something brothers, families, alumni, and supporters would look forward to every year.
The First Grill Masters
The first Grill Masters looked very different than what attendees see today.
Held in Baltimore, the inaugural competition welcomed ten contestants eager to prove they truly had the best barbecue.
The founders intentionally kept the event within the Psi Epsilon brotherhood during its first year.
It wasn't about building a large crowd.
It was about testing an idea.
Even in that first year, many of the elements that define Grill Masters today were already in place.
There were designated grilling stations spread throughout the park.
A main grill prepared food for attendees.
A DJ kept the atmosphere energetic.
An area was set aside for refreshments and fellowship.
Most importantly...
There was excitement.
By the end of the day, the founders knew they had something worth continuing.
"We had a blueprint."
The Moment Everyone Waits For
Ask someone what makes Grill Masters memorable and they'll probably mention the food.
Or the competition.
Or maybe even the custom aprons.
Ask the founders.
Their answer is different.
Their favorite moment happens after every plate has been judged.
After every contestant has finished cooking.
When the crowd gathers.
The judges finish their deliberations.
And everyone waits.
"My favorite memory is seeing the excitement of people and the nerves while waiting for the results of who won. Every reaction of the winner always gets me."
Those moments remind everyone that while competition brings people together, fellowship is what keeps them coming back.
Passing the Torch
One of the greatest challenges any tradition faces isn't starting.
It's continuing.
Many community events disappear once the founders step away.
Grill Masters didn't.
When asked why the event has lasted, the founders didn't hesitate.
"Thank Brother Hugh James."
Those four words speak volumes.
They recognize that traditions survive because someone chooses to accept the responsibility of carrying them forward.
Brother Hugh James embraced that responsibility, helping ensure Grill Masters continued to grow while preserving the spirit that made it successful from the very beginning.
His leadership has helped position the event for its sixth year and beyond.
Looking Ahead
Although Grill Masters has already become a chapter tradition, the founders believe its greatest years may still be ahead.
Their vision extends beyond friendly competition.
Beyond trophies.
Beyond annual bragging rights.
They believe Grill Masters has the potential to become one of the chapter's defining annual events.
A signature fundraiser.
A community celebration.
An event that future generations inherit rather than recreate.
As one founder reflected:
"I think it's a great idea that's still continuing today, but it also means that if the Bruhs continue bringing enthusiasm, the event can become one for the ages—and that includes myself."
That vision perfectly aligns with the mission of Founders Legacy Foundation.
